Walking Your Way To a Healthy Heart

The American Heart Association recommends that adults get 70 minutes of vigorous activity or 2.5 hours of moderate exercise every week. Keeping physically fit reduces the risks of many serious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. It also improves cholesterol, blood pressure, bone strength, energy, stamina, and weight. Getting in shape is as easy as walking.

Before you begin to exercise, visit the Carolina Heart and Leg Center, P.A. Doctors will examine any health concerns and help you begin an active lifestyle.

AS LITTLE AS 3-4 WALKS A WEEK CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Reaching the American Heart Association exercise goal is possible for most people. Three to four 40-minute walks a week can amount to the recommended amount of weekly exercise. If you have a busy schedule, even short 10 to 20-minute walks can add up.

Begin with short distances at a comfortable stroll. Over time, increase duration and distance. Correct posture is also essential to being healthy. Walk with the stomach in, head up and shoulders and arms relaxed. Step naturally and comfortably. Breathe deeply.

Once comfortable, pick up the pace. For the first couple of minutes, walk with a relaxed stride. Gradually, walk with more purpose. Add brisk intervals and progressively shorten recovery periods. Increase your speed and maintain good posture.

SIMPLY GET OUT AND WALK

There are no hard rules to walking. Simply get out and walk. Fitting exercise into your life is vital to your overall health. If you experience any pain or discomfort, consult Carolina Heart and Leg Center, P.A. for help creating a healthy routine.
